ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION

Designing and working out the details of a building is not a job for the faint hearted. There are many factors to consider and it requires tenacity, an eye for detail and a considerable amount of discipline too. The same goes for translating in this area.

I have been working in the translation industry since 1997. I studied architecture and have professional experience working at architectural firms in both the UK and Germany.  In my final year at the Mackintosh School of Architecture I won a technical design award in a UK-wide competition, based on the details of a library building I designed in St Martin in the Fields, London. The invitation to go to Germany and work for a world renowned architectural practice based in Stuttgart back in 1993 was daunting, yet an opportunity I couldn't miss. This was my introduction to German culture and the German language. I worked on prestigious projects such as the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart, which was located next door to the Staatsgalerie and was already under construction, and in contrast, an exhibition/warehouse building for STO AG in Hamburg, which received critical acclaim and was reviewed in various publications including the RIBA Journal. Since becoming a translator, in addition to technical texts in other areas, I have translated many texts related to architecture and construction, ranging from interior design specifications for a restaurant chain, catalogues for roller blinds and sun shading solutions, abstracts/descriptions of high profile buildings by well known architects such as Zaha Hadid, Herzog and De Meuron or Rem Kolhaas, window and door hardware, security systems, installation/assembly instructions for sliding doors and revolving doors, structural and civil engineering projects and many more (see below). Bilingual (German/English) glossaries containing some of the terms I have used in architectural and construction projects are also available on this website.  They contain terms I have used in architecture and construction translation projects. Although the glossaries are currently not extensive, they are continuously being updated  -> Glossaries

You can also send enquiries about specific architectural text/projects to ken@architectranslation.co.uk
